Use the Web Browser control to embed the Kuler RIA application inside the application. This way you can easily create new themes directly from Colorful Expression. Also see if this feature can be include inside blend - perhaps by adding a new window?

The projects with the HintPath for the Microsoft.Expression.Framework ref built on initial open and build without a problem. The ones that didn't have the HintPath did not. It would be helpful to have this in all for people new to the code. Also, perhaps the HintPath should just go ahead and specify c:\Program Files\Microsoft Expression\Blend instead of all the .. segments, as this is the 95+% case, but then again it did work regardless.

When running through *my* corporate LAN, I can't connect to Kuler using either the addin to expression, or the separate app...
I have modified the source code to get it working through my LAN (only edited the 'AdobeKuler' service... (see attached) a diff should show the differences...

I had a look at the code, and it looked very specific to your environment (like you point out in your comment). I'll try to find a way to reproduce the original issue and see how to provide a permanent fix.

The add-in only runs on .NET 3.5 SP1. The only SP1 specific code is the StringFormat Data Binding feature. This could easily be implemented as a custom value converter so that we remove the SP1 dependency.
Comments: Will keep .NET 3.5 SP1 as a requirement. The target audience is developers and designers and should be running the most current version of the framework.

I've decided to keep the dependency on .NET 3.5 SP1 - after all we are targeting developers/designers savvy enough to install the add-in. They should be able to update to the most current version of .NET.

"COLOURlovers is a resource that monitors and influences color trends. COLOURlovers gives the people who use color - whether for ad campaigns, product design, or in architectural specification - a place to check out a world of color, compare color palettes, submit news and comments, and read color related articles and interviews."

The COLOURlovers site has a REST API similar to the Adobe Kuler API. Information about the API can be found at http://www.colourlovers.com/api.

The architecture of the add-in supports multiple color providers, and it should be fairly simple to add this feature. The biggest challenge would be around the user experience of selecting which provider you want to use. My current thinking is to add this feature to a click event handler on the logo. When you click the provider logo you cycle to the next one. The problem with this approach is that it might break other conventions such as the logo bringing you to the home page of the site/application.

Great work. I tried it out, and it looks like it has some minor issues with paging and different lists. I'll have a look at it later this week. I want to do a new release including this feature some time soon.

The two source changes: 7045, 7250 add a ColourLovers service to Colorful with the UI switch available by right clicking on the logo and selecting switch - perhaps not ideal - but not rocket science to replace :)

I kept getting an error when running this as an addin or in standalone mode. I ran the project and am seeing an exception in Colorful.Control.Services.AdobeKuler.DownloadColors on line 70:

I believe Kuler may be returning an error (maybe due to overuse of the API key?) and is returning an HTML failure result instead of the expected XML. Here's the exception details:

I've added a fix for this issue. If the request fails with an XmlException the code will try one more time, but without the API key. If that fails it will throw an exception and the "Error Occurred" status message will be displayed. I don't think this is a problem with overuse of the API key (I don't have that kind of volume). I think it's more a general Kuler issue that hopefully will be fixed soon.

I'm also working on a better way to get exception messages out of the UI to make it easier for end-users to report bugs.

Right, the application didn't die, it just didn't load any colors. So, not very colorful. :-)

The core piece of the Colorful Expression add-in is a user control library, so it should be possible to create a Visual Studio 2008 version of the add-in.

The challenge would be to figure out what kind of behavior we want with the add-in, as it could be used for web applications (CSS/HTML), WPF and Windows Forms applications. The default color picker in Visual Studio is also allot more limited, and doesn't support picking up colors directly from the screen surface. So some research would be required to figure out what kind of integration is possible.

However, the add-in could be useful with even minimal integration, such as copying a color HEX code to the clip board (supported today by control clicking a single color).

The current look and feel of the add-in is based on a WPF theme done by Hadi Eskandari (http://blog.hightech.ir/2008/04/expression-clone.html). It currently only supports the dark (default) Expression Studio theme. Some developers don't like the dark look and feel of Expression studio, so it is possible to select a lighter color theme. The add-in does not support this theme, so the user experience wouldn't be optimal in that scenario.

Implementing this feature would require to build a new WPF resource file matching the light colors of Expression blend. This shouldn't be too hard as we have the dark theme as a basis.

Another challenge is around loading/changing the theme. Currently I've marked the resources as static, since I got some debug warnings when running the application. I don't know if these warning is a big deal, but they went away when changing it to static resources. The application ran just fine with dynamic resources, and I think we need to make the resources dynamic to enable theme changing.

The Expression Add-In framework do expose the properties and events needed to track the current selected theme, and when the user changes theme.
